The first dialogue between a bird and a machine... How so?
Weather of Arabia - Jane Lawton, Director of Impact at the "Earth Species Project" , revealed that scientists conducted a unique experiment that includes a dialogue between a bird and a machine with the aim of understanding the mechanism of communication with animals, stressing that the purpose of this experiment and similar ones is to preserve and protect these species.
This was done during a session entitled “ Will artificial intelligence enable us to communicate with all creatures?” , which was moderated by media personality Jane Witherspoon on the closing day of the World Government Summit 2024, where the session reviewed the efforts of scientists in decoding communication with nature and getting closer to it, by using the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence and machine simulation systems that experimented with a dialogue with some species of birds.
Regarding the “Earth Species Project,” Jane Lawton explained that it is a non-profit project concerned with the environment, and brings together scientists and research institutions, where data is collected about animal species and models of their sounds, and these sound frequencies in the seas and forests are studied. She pointed out that this approach contributes to Providing a deeper understanding of these organisms, contributes to our understanding of our planet and the preservation of its biodiversity.
Connecting with nature... understanding wildlife and the role of technology
Lawton explained that plants and marine organisms show the ability to interact and adapt like humans. For example, studies have revealed that plants respond in interesting ways to flower nectar, and coral reefs also choose suitable sites for themselves, and interact with the environment in ways that are not yet understood.
She pointed out that some species of turtles in the Amazon emit more than 200 different sound frequencies , and react to the sound of their young in the eggs before hatching, and this represents part of her attempt to understand communication in this type of organism.
As for the role of technology, attention to biodiversity has become more important, especially with the deterioration of natural habitats, and therefore the use of science and technology is considered a vital tool for protecting nature.
She confirmed that they have begun a scientific project to collect huge data on animal sounds and classify them using artificial intelligence to open channels of communication with animals, in cooperation with biologists, mammals, reptiles and birds.
They concluded by creating a map that collects the patterns of sounds and behaviors of various animals, and presented this data to machine learning models to understand the connections and connections between the animals.
Further experiments and comparisons are underway to expand their understanding of these creatures. They have succeeded in creating a guide to the standards of sounds, movement and behaviors of these animals, and are currently working on building the foundations for creating dialogues between birds and machines.
