First Premier League match postponed due to Storm Dara
Arab Weather - English club Everton announced on Saturday the postponement of its anticipated match against Liverpool in the English Premier League due to bad weather conditions.
The Merseyside derby was due to be played at Goodison Park on Saturday evening, but it became the first Premier League match to be postponed as a result of Storm Dara, according to Reuters.
Everton said in a statement that the decision came after a meeting of a safety advisory committee, which included representatives from the two clubs, Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council. The statement indicated that the postponement was necessary due to the risks posed by strong winds, which are expected to continue until Sunday morning, threatening the safety of the surrounding area.
For its part, Merseyside Police advised residents on Friday to avoid unnecessary travel until the weather improves.
Liverpool statement: The safety of fans and players is a priority
Liverpool FC issued a statement expressing its understanding of the fans' disappointment with this decision, stressing that the safety of fans, players and technical staff is the top priority. The club confirmed that details of the new match date and tickets will be announced at a later time.
It is worth noting that this match would have witnessed the last Merseyside clash at Goodison Park before Everton moved to its new stadium at the end of the season.
Two Championship matches were also called off on Friday due to weather conditions - Plymouth Argyle v Oxford United and Cardiff City v Watford.
Liverpool are due to face Girona in the Champions League next Tuesday, while Everton, who are in 15th place, are preparing to face Arsenal next Saturday in the Premier League.
