Jordan: 365 days without heat waves... will the absence last longer?

Arab Weather - As the Kingdom prepares to officially enter summer with the summer solstice on Saturday, June 21, 2025, climate records at the Arabia Weather Center indicate that the last significant heat wave to affect the Kingdom was nearly a year ago, specifically at the end of June 2024, in one of the most prominent early heat waves to hit the region.

June 2024: Early heat wave and scorching temperatures

The wave occurred during the period from June 12 to 20, 2024.

During this period, temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius in the capital, Amman, and were even higher in the Jordan Valley, Aqaba, and the Eastern Badia, where they exceeded 45 degrees Celsius.

The wave was accompanied by easterly and dry winds at times, and stifling weather in low-lying areas.

What is the definition of a heat wave in Jordan?

A heat wave is defined as a condition in which temperatures exceed average temperatures by five degrees Celsius or more for at least three consecutive days. Temperatures often exceed the mid-30s Celsius in Amman for several consecutive days, making it a heat wave.

A year without heat waves so far... Will the mild weather continue?

Despite the meteorological start of summer on June 1, the Kingdom has not recorded a single heat wave so far in the summer of 2025. Weather forecasts indicate that temperatures will remain slightly above average, but there are no signs of heat waves in the coming days.

However, July and August remain the most likely periods for heat waves, with monitoring continuing for any potential subtropical high activity or extensions of hot air masses from the Arabian Peninsula.
