Jordan was under the influence of air depressions that ranged between rain and snow on this day in previous years.

Arab Weather - Away from the stable atmosphere that the Kingdom is currently witnessing, we return in the recent archive to the past three years, as the archival data available to the Arab Weather Center shows the impact of air depressions on the Kingdom at this time in previous years, which brought abundant rain and snow to some of the Kingdom’s highlands.

The current situation contradicts previous years and air depressions are absent from the atmosphere

While the situation this year is completely different, as the Kingdom is still far from the usual winter depressions, and is affected by a high pressure system covering all layers of the atmosphere, which imposes stable weather and temperatures higher than their normal rates. In fact, the weather in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Aqaba is closer to spring than winter.

In addition, rainfall rates are very weak, and can be described as worrying in most areas of the Kingdom if we compare them to the expected rate of rainfall until this time of year. The same archival data shows a noticeable decrease in the number of classified depressions, and they are even absent from Jordan in the current rainy season (2024/2025), compared to the same period in previous seasons.

We recall with you the winter atmosphere that prevailed in the Kingdom on this day in past years:

January 19, 2022: The Kingdom was affected by a third-degree depression (medium-high effectiveness), accompanied by a very cold polar air mass. A cold air front passed through, leading to a drop in temperatures, with cold to very cold weather prevailing, and heavy rains falling at times, accompanied by hail showers. Snow also fell on heights above 1,000 meters in the morning, and the level of precipitation increased during the day to include heights above 1,200 meters. As the effect of the very cold Siberian mass deepened, snowfall continued on the highlands of the north, center and south, and snowfall extended to some areas of the southern and eastern Badia.

January 19, 2021: On January 19, 2021, the Kingdom was affected by a third-degree depression, accompanied by the first polar air mass, which led to a sharp drop in temperature and the prevalence of very cold weather. Heavy rains and hail showers fell in various regions of the Kingdom, and snow covered the high mountainous areas in the north, center and south of the Kingdom. Snow accumulated on the peaks of the northern and southern highlands, and the effect of the polar mass deepened after the depression left, leading to a wide wave of ice and freezing in several areas of the Kingdom, followed by the effect of the Siberian high with very cold weather and strong easterly winds.

January 19, 2020 : In 2020, the Kingdom was affected by a second-degree (normal) depression, and cold weather prevailed with showers of rain in the north, center, south, and east of the Kingdom.
