وقد أدى أسوأ جفاف الى خفض انتاج المحاصيل وانخفاض إمدادات المياه للماشية الى مستويات حرجة وإعاقة الحركة في نهر المسيسيبي وهو المسار الملاحي الرئيسي في الولايات المتحدة نظراً لإنخفاض حاد في منسوبه، وهو الأمر الذي سيضطر السلطات اللأميركية الى إستيراد كميات كبيرة من هذه المواد الغذائية وبالتالي رفع الأسعار وتفاقم المشاكل الإقتصادية في البلاد.
