The eclipse began at 8:09 pm EST with the moon entering the shadow of the Earth and lasted 85 minutes before the phase of the total eclipse began around 9:16 pm, at which point the color of the moon turned red, for this reason the moon at the total eclipse is called a blood moon .

Phases of a total lunar eclipse

A total lunar eclipse passes through three phases: semi-shadow, partial, and total.

1. The semi-shadow stage: It is the beginning of the eclipse and can hardly be seen with the naked eye. In this phase, the moon passes through the outer shadow of the Earth, and it is repeated twice, before and after the phase of the total eclipse when the moon moves back into the outer shadow of the Earth.
2. Partial phase: The partial phase occurs when the moon crosses the edge of the central shadow of the planet. At this stage, the earth's shadow moves across the face of the moon slowly, obscuring its brightly lit center so that only a thin glowing outer band remains visible from the edge of the moon. The partial phase continues until the outer strip completely disappears and the moon is in the full shadow of the earth, and the total phase begins, and the partial phase is repeated when the bright light begins to appear again on the edge of the moon, where it begins to emerge from the earth’s shadow again.
3. Total phase: is when the moon is completely in the shadow of the earth, at this point the moon will appear in a blood red color.
