ويذكر أن بادالكا (57 عاماً)، قد تخرج من كلية ييسك للطيران العسكري سنة 1979، ليلتحق بالخدمة العسكرية طياراً حربياً، ويتبوأ مكانة مرموقة بين خيرة الطيارين الحربيين الروس. وتدرج في ترقيه العسكري حتى رتبة عقيد في سلاح الجو، وسجل 1500 ساعة طيران على متن 6 أنواع من الطائرات التجريبية الأولى قبل اعتمادها في سلاح الجو الروسي.
وكرّمت روسيا بادالكا بمنحه جملة من الأوسمة والميداليات تقديرا له على جهوده أمام الدولة والمجتمع، كما حاز على ميدالية الصندوق الدولي للملاحة الفضائية.
