A 6.0-magnitude earthquake strikes Afghanistan, killing more than 600 people.

Arab Weather - Late Sunday night, Afghanistan was struck by a 6.0-magnitude earthquake, which struck northeast of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province. Sources indicate that the epicenter of the earthquake was in Kuz Kunar district of Nangarhar province, near the border with Kunar province. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of only 8-10 kilometers below the surface, which increased the severity of its impact and caused widespread destruction.

According to the Afghan Ministry of Interior, the earthquake resulted in 622 deaths and more than 1,500 injuries, while some other media sources reported a death toll of 610 and approximately 1,300 injuries. The earthquake also triggered several aftershocks, with a magnitude of 5.2, in addition to another tremor of 4.5 magnitude.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 11:47 p.m. Sunday, 27 kilometers east-northeast of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, at a depth of only 8 kilometers. Shallow earthquakes often cause greater damage.

Footage from Nangarhar showed people rushing to dig through the rubble with their bare hands in the dark, searching for loved ones, while the injured were carried on stretchers from collapsed buildings to helicopters. Villagers in Kunar also conducted interviews in front of their destroyed homes.
