A new 5.3-magnitude earthquake strikes northern Greece, but no damage is reported.

Arab Weather - Greece recorded a new earthquake today, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale. The earthquake struck offshore near Mount Athos, known for its historic Orthodox monasteries, according to the Institute of Geophysics in Athens.

The institute explained, via its website, that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of approximately 12.5 kilometers, in an area northwest of the town of Karyes, the administrative capital of Mount Athos.

For his part, a local official in Karis confirmed that no material damage had been recorded so far.

It is noteworthy that Mount Athos, or "the Holy Mountain," located in the Macedonia region of northern Greece, includes 20 inhabited monasteries dating back centuries and has enjoyed a semi-independent administrative system since the Byzantine era.
