Petra Regional Authority: Hundreds of tourists evacuated due to floods; no injuries reported

Arab Weather - Rescue teams from the Petra Region Authority and Civil Defense evacuated hundreds of tourists from Petra on Sunday without any injuries after flash floods hit the archaeological site this afternoon, according to Yazan Mahadin, Commissioner of the Petra Region Authority's Protected Areas and Tourism Department.

Muhadeen added to Al Mamlaka that the authorities have suspended the sale of entry tickets to the archaeological site starting this afternoon to ensure the safety of tourists.

Muhadeen said that the number of tourists who visited the archaeological site today reached 1,785, most of whom were being evacuated by Civil Defense personnel who had been wandering around the Treasury, the Siq, the Bullet Point area, the Monastery, and the roofs of the Prophet Aaron.

Muhadeen confirmed that no significant injuries were recorded among the evacuated tourists.

The city of Petra witnessed heavy rainfall due to a low-pressure system affecting the southern regions of the Kingdom, leading to flash floods in some valleys and low-lying areas, amid a significant drop in temperatures and strong winds.

The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) urged citizens to exercise caution and stay away from valleys and areas where floods and rain accumulate. It also urged citizens to secure potentially volatile objects and adhere to the instructions and guidelines issued by relevant authorities to ensure safety and avoid any risks that may arise from the weather conditions expected over the coming hours.

The authority affirmed its readiness to deal with any emergency during the period of the depression's impact, announcing that citizens' comments will be received through emergency rooms at the following numbers.
