A powerful winter storm sweeps through central and eastern Canada

"We recommend that if people don't have to go to work today they stay home and if they do have to go out they should move slowly on the roads ... because the conditions are very dangerous," said Gerald Cheng, a meteorologist at the Environment Agency.

The largest educational department in Canada, the Toronto District Education Department, which has about 300,000 students, closed all schools for the first time since 2011 due to the storm, and schools were closed in many other regions.

A spokeswoman for Pearson International Airport in Toronto announced the cancellation of 32 percent of flights.
