موقع AarabiaWeather.com - أظهرت تقارير من وكالتي ناسا NASA و NOAA في نهاية شتاء القطب الجنوبي لهذا العام 2015 أن ثقب الأوزون فوق القطب الجنوبي ، لازال يحتفظ بحجمه وهو 24.1 مليون كيلومتر مربع وعند مقارنته مع السنوات السابقة فقد تبين أن حجم ثقب الأوزون يأخذ طابع الاستقرار دون أي تراجع مما يعطي الأمل بالتفاؤل الحذر بتحسنه خلال الأعوام القادمة .
وتكمن أهمية طبقة الأوزون أنها تحمي الأرض من الأشعّة الفوق البنفسجية الضارّة التي تأتي من الشمس وتقع طبقة الأوزون في طبقة الستراتوسفير على ارتفاع ما بين 15 – 30 كلم فوق سطح الأرض والأوزون O3 هو غاز يتكون من 3 ذرات أكسجين ويميل لونه الى الأزرق ويتميز أنه يتفاعل بشدة مع الغازات الأخرى.
ويذكر أنه في عام 1994 أعلنت الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة يوم 16 سبتمبر هو اليوم العالمي للمحافظة على طبقة الأوزون.
