New lung virus spreads widely in China
Arab Weather - Chinese authorities have imposed new emergency measures after recording a widespread outbreak of a new virus known as human metapneumovirus (HMPV), which comes five years after the outbreak of the Corona pandemic . It is noted that cases are largely concentrated in the northern provinces, especially among children.
Nature and effects of HMPV virus
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus affects the upper and lower respiratory tract and is dangerous for children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
This virus was first discovered in 2001 and belongs to the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) family.
Symptoms and incubation period
The symptoms of the virus are similar to those of a cold, flu, or even Corona , and include:
- fever
- Cough
- nasal congestion
- shortness of breath
Symptoms may progress to include bronchitis or hypoxia, resulting in blue discoloration of the skin, especially in infants. The incubation period lasts from 3 to 6 days, and the duration of the illness varies depending on the severity of the condition.
Modes of transmission
The virus is transmitted through:
- Contact with infected people
- Inhaling secretions from coughing or sneezing
- Shaking hands or touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes
HMPV prevention
To protect against infection, it is recommended to:
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.
- Avoid touching your face before making sure your hands are clean.
- Stay away from sick people.
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
- Clean frequently used surfaces such as door handles.
- Stay home if you have symptoms.
Treatment and management of infected cases
There is currently no treatment or vaccine for this virus, but symptoms can be relieved with medical care. Most children recover within one to two weeks, but some severe cases may require hospitalization.
