Why are the nights in eastern Amman cooler than in the western peaks these days?
Arab Weather - Relatively cold weather has prevailed recently during the night hours, with minimum temperatures in the mountains reaching around 12-14 degrees Celsius, while they are colder than that in the eastern plains and valleys, including eastern Amman.
Why are plains and valleys cooler than mountains?
Meteorologists at the Arab Weather Center said that valleys and plains are cooler than mountains under certain conditions, especially on clear nights when the winds are calm, due to a phenomenon known as "thermal inversion."
It is a weather phenomenon in which the temperature rises with height above the ground level, contrary to normal. The air close to the ground becomes cooler than the air above it, which leads to the trapping of cold air in valleys and plains.
Why does the phenomenon of thermal inversion occur in the eastern plains?
On clear nights, the Earth cools very quickly as heat is released into the atmosphere. The air above the mountain tops cools and becomes denser. Because of its high density, it begins to slide down the slopes of mountains and hills.
This cold air continues to flow and collect in the plains and valleys, making the valleys and plains cooler than the mountains.
