واستخدم القمر الصناعي جهاز الراديومتر لقياس الطاقة الإشعاعية تحت الحمراء، مما جعل نهر النيل يظهر ملونًا بالأحمر، وأوضحت وكالة الفضاء أن الأشعة تحت الحمراء الحرارية المميَّزة الصادرة عن النباتات المحيطة بالنهر لوِّنت الأحمر للدلالة على مساحات انتشار هذه النباتات، فاللون الأحمر يميز المناطق الزراعية الموجودة وسط الصحراء.
