Arab Weather - Sinan Khalaf - A video clip circulating on Twitter for a device that extracts fresh water from the air in the city of Neom has sparked a lot of controversy about its mechanism of action in light of the desert and dry nature of the region.

About this, the CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Properties said, in a tweet through his official account on the social networking site “Twitter”, that this advanced technology for extracting water will soon be available in the “Majid Al Futtaim Tower”.

Regarding this technology, Evelyn Wang, the lead researcher in the study on extracting water from air, said that "the new system only needs sunlight, and it is clearly available in desert areas, and it does not need additional sources of energy or moving parts."

Wang pointed out that "this modern technology consists of a small box-shaped device, called a water harvester, that can be moved from one place to another, and is able to supply an entire family with their water needs, even under the most difficult conditions in the dry desert, where the percentage of Humidity up to 8% sometimes.

The box contains "granules called the MOF, which are crystals open to air to absorb moisture, and are placed in a plastic cube, about two cubic feet in size."

According to Wang, the top of the box is left open at night for air to flow into the frame, and then covered in the morning at sunrise to heat up and expel moisture outside, while empty boxes are ready to absorb moisture from the air again.

The main component of the device is the porous material that contains small holes through which only liquids and air can penetrate. It is also part of compounds belonging to the so-called “organic mineral frameworks”, and they appear to the naked eye as grains of sand, although they are a hybrid composition of organic and mineral materials.
