Arab Weather - Weather maps at the Arab Weather Center indicate that the Kingdom will be affected, God willing, starting Friday by an extremely hot air mass that meets the scientific criteria necessary to be classified as the first heat wave of this summer. It is also considered the first since the June 2024 heat wave, but it will be accompanied by some exceptional weather conditions, which we will review in this report.
Experts at the Arab Weather Center said that recent indicators indicate that the heatwave's impact could last for up to a week, but with varying intensity from day to day. They added that when a heatwave lasts longer, it typically intensifies the way people feel, making the atmosphere more stressful and tiring.
During the heat wave, most Jordanian cities are expected to record their highest temperatures since the beginning of the current summer season, with temperatures ranging between 38 and 43 degrees Celsius in many Jordanian villages and cities, and exceeding the 40-degree mark in neighborhoods of the capital, Amman, particularly in the eastern parts.
The air mass is expected to have a scorching effect on the Jordan Valley, particularly the central and northern regions, including the Dead Sea, as well as Aqaba Governorate and the eastern parts of the Kingdom. Maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 45 degrees Celsius, and it's even possible that they could reach 50 degrees Celsius in some areas of the Jordan Valley, particularly the central Jordan Valley.
Computer maps from the Arab Weather Center show that the heat wave coincides with an influx of moisture into the middle and upper layers of the atmosphere, coinciding with high heating processes at the Earth's surface. This will result in the appearance of medium and high clouds, and there is a possibility of scattered and random thunderstorms, especially in parts of the south and east of the Kingdom, starting Saturday afternoon, and continuing daily until Monday, which is unusual at the height of summer.
Thunderstorms are also expected to be accompanied by what are known as strong downdrafts in their areas, with gusts reaching over 70 km/h. This can lead to the formation of dense dust waves and sandstorms that arise in the vicinity of thunderclouds due to the accompanying strong downdrafts. These storms will gradually expand to reach areas far from the clouds, and may even reach cities.
For example, a thunderstorm may develop in the eastern Badia regions, generating strong downdrafts that stir up dust and form a sandstorm. The storm begins locally but quickly and suddenly spreads to wider areas, including city centers. These winds require securing outdoor belongings and driving with extreme caution during these conditions, especially in the Badia regions.
