Despite the passing of the first third of May, numerical models and weather maps still indicate the continuation of the sandstorm and dust season in large parts of the Arab world, particularly in the Levant, Iraq, and northern Arabian Peninsula, starting from the end of this week.
Weather experts predicted that the Levant region would be affected, starting from the afternoon and evening hours of Friday, by an influx of active westerly winds with occasional strong gusts, leading to the launch of a wave of dense dust from the eastern desert regions of Syria and Jordan, and its rapid advance in the form of a sandstorm towards Iraq and the northern parts of the Arabian Peninsula.
This dust storm is expected to contribute to a significant decrease and perhaps near-zero visibility in horizontal visibility, especially on desert roads and international roads linking Iraq with Syria and Jordan, which calls for extreme caution while driving.
On Saturday, a Khamsin low-pressure system is expected to form in North Africa and northern Libya, pushing active winds from desert areas and causing dust storms that will reduce horizontal visibility in most of the northern parts of the country, before moving later towards Egypt and then the Levant region.
Weather indicators suggest that the region will be affected during the coming week by several Khamsin depressions, which are likely to form in North Africa and move eastward towards the Levant, the northern Arabian Peninsula and Iraq.
These low-pressure systems are expected to contribute to stirring up dusty conditions at intervals, leading to a temporary decrease in horizontal visibility, especially in open and desert areas. God knows best.
