Several regions in the Kingdom witnessed significant rainfall activity during April 2026, which raised questions about the nature of this situation and its climatic exceptionality.
Regarding this, Dr. Abdullah Al-Musnad confirmed that these rains fall within the normal spring pattern that is common in the Arabian Peninsula, but this year they come with a relatively higher intensity than the usual rates for the month of April in some areas.
April is a sensitive transitional period between winter and summer, as the rapid temperature contrast between the Earth's surface and the upper layers of the atmosphere increases the chances of atmospheric instability.
These conditions arise as a result of the interaction of cold air masses coming from the north with warm and moist air masses from the south and southwest, leading to the development of cumulonimbus clouds capable of producing rain of varying intensity.
Spring rains are usually characterized by rapid development and irregular distribution of thunderstorms, and may be accompanied by downdraft activity, dust storms before precipitation, and the possibility of hail in some cases.
Radar images also show that these conditions often occur in separate cells, with heavy rainfall in specific areas, while neighboring areas remain with little to no rainfall.
These cases are usually active during the afternoon hours and extend into the evening, a pattern known for the spring season in the region, which is locally called by names such as “Al-Marawih” or “Al-Sarayat”.
Dr. Abdullah Al-Musnad confirms that these phenomena are a natural part of the region’s climatic behavior, with a clear variation in their intensity from year to year.
