ويعود سبب جفاف بحيرة "أورميا" إلى سوء إدارة مياهها وعدم تنظيم سياسات الزراعة وتناقص معدلات هطول المطر، حيث تشير إحصائيات برنامج الأمم المتحدة للتنمية إلى أن حجم البحيرة تقلص بمقدار الثلثين منذ عام 1997.
