Arab Weather - Satellite images from the Arab Weather Center indicate the movement of a low-pressure system, similar to a Khamsin, towards the eastern Mediterranean basin, specifically off the northern coast of Egypt. This low-pressure system has deepened in that region as a result of its convergence with a cold air mass centered over the Mediterranean Sea, leading to a further drop in atmospheric pressure at the center of the low.
The low-pressure system is expected to be accompanied by a significant increase in wind speed across the eastern Mediterranean region, with strong winds and occasional gusts. These winds will stir up dense dust storms, particularly in northern Egypt, the Levant, parts of northern Saudi Arabia, and Iraq, leading to a noticeable and potentially severe reduction in horizontal visibility in some areas, especially in desert and open regions.
The strong winds associated with the low-pressure system are causing significant disruption to maritime traffic in the eastern Mediterranean, with waves expected to reach heights of 2.5 to 3 meters in some areas, particularly off the Syrian and Lebanese coasts. This sea disturbance also extends along the coastline of the Levant, northern Egypt, parts of the Turkish coast, and Cyprus, potentially making navigation difficult during this period.
The convergence of a Khamsin low-pressure system with a cold air mass in the upper atmosphere is expected to create widespread atmospheric instability across the eastern Mediterranean, including Jordan. This will result in the formation of cumulonimbus clouds in the coming hours, particularly during the afternoon and evening, accompanied by rainfall of varying intensity, which may be heavy at times in some areas, and locally accompanied by hail, lightning, and thunder.
These weather conditions may cause an increased risk of flash floods and the formation of sudden or localized torrents in some areas. Therefore, it is advised to follow weather updates and take precautions during the period of unstable weather conditions in the coming hours.
