وتحدُث هذه الظاهر عند تقاطع مدار القمر الظاهري مع مدار كوكب الزهرة بحيث يمُر القمر من أمام الزهرة ما يعمل على حجب كوكب الزُهرة واختفائه بشكل كامل خلف القمر، ويرجع إهتمام الفلكيين بهذا الحدث النادر إلى شدة لمعان كوكب الزهرة مُقارنة بالكواكب والنجوم الأخرى.
