Weather of Arabia - A new earthquake struck today, Wednesday, Herat Province, western Afghanistan, shortly after an earthquake of similar strength occurred in the same region, resulting in the death of more than two thousand people. According to American and German seismological estimates, the intensity of the new earthquake reached about 6.3 degrees on the Richter scale. There have been no reports of casualties due to this earthquake so far.
The US Seismological Center reported that an earthquake occurred around five in the morning local time in Herat Province, western Afghanistan, and the epicenter of the earthquake was about 29 kilometers north of the city of Herat. The German Research Center for Geological Sciences reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers below the Earth's surface.
The new earthquake occurred while many residents of Herat Province were still residing in tents, after the previous earthquake destroyed their homes, which were mainly built of brick. The earthquake that occurred last Saturday had a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale, and was accompanied by several aftershocks. The epicenter of this earthquake was located about 35 kilometers northwest of the city of Herat. This city includes about half a million people, while the population of the state is approximately two million people.
Indeed, the earthquake caused significant losses, killing between 2,000 and 2,500 people, as well as partially or completely destroying 1,300 homes. Local authorities in Herat described these human losses and damage as shocking. Local media reports indicated that about 12 villages in the Zinda Jan and Gorian districts of Herat Province were completely destroyed as a result of the earthquake. This situation reflects great losses and difficult humanitarian challenges facing the residents of the region.
