Rising temperatures affect soil salinity and increase the spread of pests and diseases, making it difficult for many plants to adapt, putting them at risk of extinction.

Fusarium wilt disease threatens bananas

A popular banana variety is facing extinction due to a fungal disease called Fusarium wilt (FWB), which disrupts the flow of nutrients to the fruit and causes it to wilt. In the 1950s, the disease caused the extinction of the Gros Michel banana variety. Now, the more common Cavendish variety is threatened by deteriorating soil quality.

• Citrus greening threatens oranges

As winter sets in, orange trees are also threatened by climate change and citrus greening disease. This disease, for which there is no cure, disfigures the fruit and makes it impossible to eat. The disease has devastatingly affected orange groves in Asia, the Americas and Africa, reducing crop yields by 20% in Brazil, 60% in Guadeloupe and 90% in Florida.

• Avocado and the impact of water scarcity

Avocados, which require large amounts of water, are also vulnerable to climate change in a drier, hotter world. This is reducing their cultivation areas in some key regions such as Mexico, Spain, Chile and Colombia, and weakening their ability to survive in these areas.
