Japanese authorities issued a tsunami warning Monday along the country's east coast after a powerful earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake occurred in the sea off the coast of Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan, at a depth of 50 kilometers below the sea surface.
