Discovering a secret forest inside a hole in China

Arabia Weather - A team of scientists discovered one of the oldest forests in China, as it was found more than 600 feet below the surface inside a huge hole during their trip to explore caves in May 2022. This phenomenon is known in China as “Tianqing” or heavenly holes.

The massive excavation took place in Guangxi, southwest China, home to the UNESCO Li Fengshan Global Geopark. The park has been described as mainly sedimentary, containing more than 60% Devonian Carbohydrate rocks, and up to 3,000 meters thick.

According to the information mentioned on dailymail.co.uk, scientists and researchers expected that this forest would contain unique species of plants and animals that had not been explored before. According to the official report issued by the Chinese News Agency, this new discovery is considered the thirtieth of its kind in the province.

Zhang Yuanhai, senior chief engineer of the Institute of Karst Geology of the China Geological Survey, said that the site where the primeval forest was discovered is well-preserved at the bottom and has 3 caves in its walls.

Features of the Secret Forest

The forest was discovered inside a huge hole that went more than 600 feet below the surface of the earth in the Guangxi region of southwest China, and is known as "tiankeng" or heavenly holes. This is the 30th such discovery in the province, and scientists have expected the forest to be home to rare species of plants and animals.

The dimensions of the crater are approximately 306 meters in length, 150 meters in width, and 192 meters in depth, making its volume exceed 5 million cubic meters, and it is classified as a relatively large crater. The forest has been described as surreal, with ancient trees reaching around 40 meters in height, and is depicted as offering an enchanting view with shade plants that reach up to a person's shoulder. Scientists suggest that the unique growth of the forest is due to the influence of sunlight that passes through the large hole and helps support plant life.
