Arab Weather - The Moroccan Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday the evacuation of more than 108,000 people from four regions in the north and west of the Kingdom, due to floods and torrential rains during the past few days.

The ministry confirmed in its statement that the evacuation process was carried out gradually and in an organized manner according to the levels of risk and the extent of the expected damage, with the provision of transportation and support mechanisms for those affected, and resulted, as of this morning, in the evacuation of 108,423 people distributed as follows:

  • Larache: 81,709 people (especially the city of Ksar El Kebir)
  • Quneitra: 14,133 people
  • Sidi Qasim: 9,728 people
  • Sidi Slimane: 2,853 people

The ministry also indicated the establishment of shelter camps and reception areas to provide the necessary support, ensuring the safety of citizens and mitigating the effects of the floods.

In a field development, floods were recorded in the suburbs of Guercif in eastern Morocco as a result of the rising water level of the Masoun Valley. Traffic was also halted on several main axes in the north and west of the country, including the roads linking Tangier and Tetouan, Larache, Kenitra, Sidi Qasim and Sidi Slimane.

Moroccan authorities are continuing their intensive field efforts in Ksar El Kebir, Tetouan and Sidi Kacem to evacuate citizens from areas at risk of flooding, following warnings of unprecedented rainfall that could increase the water level of the Oued El Makhazine dam.

The Moroccan Meteorological Service had warned on Monday of a low-pressure system accompanied by heavy rains reaching up to 150 mm in some areas, causing flash floods and scattered floods.
