Hurricane Eric intensifies and threatens the coast of Mexico

Arab Weather - The Arab Weather Center is monitoring the development of the violent tropical cyclone "Eric," currently classified as a Category 4 storm, over the eastern Pacific Ocean via the latest satellite images.

The hurricane exhibits strong characteristics and a clear coherence in its spiral structure, and it is expected to pose a serious threat to southern Mexico in the coming hours, with extremely heavy rains that could lead to flooding and landslides, in addition to strong winds exceeding 200 km/h.

Meteorologists said Hurricane Eric was approaching Mexico's Pacific coast on a path expected to bring heavy rains, strong winds, storm surges, and the potential for mudslides in the country's southern coastal regions.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center said in a warning that rainfall could reach 20 inches (about 51 centimeters) in the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, with lesser amounts in the states of Chiapas, Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco. The rains threaten to bring flooding and mudslides, especially in steep-sided areas.

The Category 1 hurricane was located about 130 miles (205 kilometers) south-southeast of Puerto Ángel, Mexico, Wednesday morning, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph). It was moving northwest at 8 mph (13 kph).
