Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh , Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, confirmed that Jordan is working hard to exploit all its capabilities to increase the production of renewable energy with the aim of meeting local needs and exporting green energy, whether it is electricity or green hydrogen.
During his participation in the activities of the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC 2023) , Minister Al-Kharabsheh indicated that Jordan is close to completing a national strategy for green hydrogen, and intends to take many measures that will help achieve this goal, and these steps will make Jordan a regional center for production and export. Hydrogen .
Within the framework of regional cooperation, Minister Al-Kharabsha met with a number of energy ministers from different countries, including the Emirati Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail Al-Mazrouei, the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Engineer Tariq Al-Mulla, the Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water, Dr. Walid Fayyad, and the Cypriot Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, George. Papanastasiou, during these meetings, ways to enhance cooperation in the energy sector between countries were discussed.
Regarding the energy transition in Jordan, Minister Al-Kharabsheh indicated that this transformation began a long time ago, as the contribution of renewable energy to electricity production in the country was 1 percent in 2014 , but it has risen significantly to currently reach 27 percent . He said :
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is currently preparing a strategy for electric transport, a strategy for green hydrogen, and preparing a national plan for energy rationalization, which will be an input for reviewing the comprehensive strategy for the energy sector, pointing to the projects that are currently being implemented to supply a number of industrial cities with natural gas, as well as programs and projects related to exploration for Rare metals.
During Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh ’s participation in the specialized session on building bridges to accelerate the spread of hydrogen, Minister Al-Kharabsheh highlighted the efforts made by the Jordanian government to enhance its position in this field, and this was done through the formation of the National Committee for Green Hydrogen, which is concerned with following up on the preparation of the National Strategy for Green Hydrogen. And developing legislation and studies regulating this sector. This committee also evaluates investment opportunities in the field of green hydrogen and provides the necessary procedures to regulate them.
Minister Kharabsheh confirmed that the Jordanian government has signed a framework agreement for investment in green ammonia and green hydrogen , in addition to signing another memorandum of understanding to study investment in green methanol production in the Kingdom, in cooperation with two international companies specialized in this field, and it is expected that the government will soon sign a number of Memorandums of understanding with companies interested in investing in the field of green hydrogen, green ammonia and their products.
