Arab Weather - Iraq recorded the highest temperatures on Earth over the past 24 hours, with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in many parts of the country, amid a severe heat wave sweeping the country.
Basra, specifically Basra International Airport, ranked first globally in terms of the highest recorded temperature, reaching 51.8 degrees Celsius. Large areas in the south of the country, such as Nasiriyah, Amara, Karbala, and the Hussein City in Basra, also recorded similar temperatures exceeding 51 degrees Celsius.
Baghdad wasn't immune to the heatwave, with temperatures hitting 50.5 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) last day. This weather is the result of a deepening, widespread surface low pressure system, coupled with the influence of a high pressure system in the upper atmosphere. This high pressure system has brought hot, dry winds and a significant rise in temperatures across the country, particularly in the southern regions.
