It is an archaeological site in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the Arabian Peninsula and the Middle East. It is located in the Al-Ula Governorate of Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah Region. It was the capital of the southern Nabataeans Kingdom in the north of the Arabian Peninsula.

Al-Hijr is the name of Diyar Thamud in the Valley of the Villages between Medina and Tabuk, a place that existed before the era of Islam in the Al-Ula region, within the Medina region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Traces of the Nabataean and Roman occupation were found, while the Holy Qur’an mentioned the existence of a settlement in ancient times, namely the people of Thamud in the third millennium BC.
