Arab Weather - Dr. Abdullah Al-Misnad, a former professor of climate at Qassim University, confirmed that the moderate weather the Kingdom is experiencing these days is due to a rare upper atmospheric system similar to what he described as a "large-scale natural ventilation system," which is moderating temperatures despite the onset of summer.

Al-Masnad explained that the current situation is the result of an atmospheric composition comprising three main layers, which together work to limit the impact of hot air masses:

  • The 500 mb layer (5.5 km high): where an upper trough or extension of an upper low is observed in the eastern Mediterranean and northern Arabian Peninsula, accompanied by a clear cooling in the upper layers, which limits the expansion of the hot upper highs.

  • The 700 mb layer (about 3 km high): It is characterized by relatively cold northerly to northwesterly winds coming from the eastern Mediterranean, which prevents the formation of a high pressure system and keeps the layers from heating up excessively.

  • The 850 millibar layer (about 1.5 km high): This layer directly affects the temperature of the Earth's surface, and a moderate air mass and northerly to northwesterly winds appear in it.

He explained that this atmospheric composition has led to a noticeable moderation in temperatures, despite the region being in the peak of summer.

He noted that the situation is temporary in nature, but it represents a vivid example of how weather systems can help mitigate the harsh summer heat, adding, "It's a valuable opportunity to breathe a little from the summer heat, but it's often temporary, and the heat masses could return at any time." He concluded by saying, "And God knows best."
