Arabia Weather - A popular lake in central Mexico, which is considered a major tourist destination, was severely affected by drought, deforestation, and the theft of its water, which led to the loss of more than half of its volume during the Day of the Dead celebrations last November. Recently, the Mexican authorities discovered that the lake is completely dry. Investigations began into the theft of water for the purpose of selling it, as a result of the water crisis that the country is suffering from.
The Mexican newspaper La Expanción indicated that the local government of Patzcuaro explained that the lake, which is part of the municipality of the same name and also known as the “Magic City,” is affected by many environmental factors and illegal water extraction.

The newspaper pointed out that the Patzaczaro government confirmed that the lake's water had been stolen several times, as it was sold at illegally high prices as a result of the water crisis that the country is suffering from. Accordingly, the government formed a committee to prevent the theft of about 600,000 liters of water daily.
Officials say that droughts greatly affect the lake, as its water levels do not replenish, and dry periods encourage criminals to steal the lake's water for sale. The city of Patzcuaro and its lake are important tourist destinations, especially during the Day of the Dead celebrations in November.
