The Petra archaeological reserve will be closed to visitors on Thursday as a precaution due to weather conditions.

Arab Weather - The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority has decided to completely close the Petra Archaeological Reserve to visitors on Thursday, March 26, 2026, as a precautionary measure in light of the prevailing and expected weather conditions for tomorrow.

The Commissioner of the Department of Archaeological and Tourism Affairs, Engineer Yazan Mahadin, said that the decision to close came after close monitoring of weather reports, which indicate that the region will be affected by heavy rainfall that may lead to the continued formation of torrents on Thursday, especially in low-lying areas and narrow passages within the archaeological site.

Mahadin stressed that the safety of visitors and employees is the authority’s top priority, noting that taking such precautionary decisions aims to avoid any potential risks and to preserve lives and property.

Mahadin added that the Authority’s staff raised the level of preparedness early on, as work was intensified to inspect the flood channels and water drainage culverts inside and around the reserve, and within all the communities of the Petra region, in addition to putting in place emergency plans to deal with any developments that may occur as a result of the weather conditions.

He explained that the emergency teams will remain on standby around the clock, in coordination with the security services and civil defense, to monitor developments in the weather situation and take the necessary measures as they occur.

Al-Mahadin called on citizens and visitors to adhere to the instructions and to follow the official channels of the authority to learn about the latest updates, stressing that the reserve will be reopened as soon as the weather conditions stabilize and the site is fully ready to receive visitors.
