Arab Weather - The Saba winds are a well-known local wind in the Hijaz, where the Saba winds blow across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a result of the horizontal temperature differences between the interior regions and the Red Sea region, so that they move from high pressure areas to low pressure areas, and the Saba winds mostly blow from Najd to the Hijaz and Tihama.

Explanation of the dust caused by the east wind and the reason for its blowing

The Saba winds result from the dominance of a cold surface air mass over the eastern Hijaz Mountains and central and northern Saudi Arabia, coinciding with the dominance of a surface high-pressure system over those areas. The cold air is pushed westward towards the Hijaz Mountains due to its high density. The Hijaz Mountains act as a barrier preventing the cold air from moving towards the Red Sea. The air finds no way except to pass through the passages between the mountains, so its speed increases and it pushes strongly towards the coastal areas, which stirs up dust.

The Saba winds are known to the Arabs as one of the four mother winds, which are: the north winds, the south winds, the Saba winds, and the Dabur winds. They are called that because they are good winds that yearn or long for the Holy Kaaba. The Messenger, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, praised the Saba winds and said about them: “I was given victory by the Saba wind, and the people of Aad were destroyed by the Dabur wind.”
